Don't start on Mk IIs Nij.
My oldest car memory is being dropped off back in Leyton, East London by my dad's mate in his steel blue 2.5 Daimler, after visiting them in the Midlands.
Must have been around '70/'71, but still remember seeing that shape parked there and how wonderful it was. Must have been 4 or 5 at the time.
Always been a want since learning to drive, but have never really come close to getting one.
Gorgeous things.
Probably 10 - 11 years later than that, around 1979 / 80, my best mate and I used to get a lift to Cub Scouts either in my dad's car (Renault 16) or his dad's (Jaguar 240). Clearly I preferred the latter, although the seats in the Jaaag were set too low for us 10 year old kids and were, I later found out, trimmed in the cost-cutting "Ambla" faux-leather. Loved that car though, which sadly died a long, slow death after he pulled the engine for a rebuild and promptly got divorced. I think it was scraped off the drive and weighed-in, eventually. My oldest car memory is being dropped off back in Leyton, East London by my dad's mate in his steel blue 2.5 Daimler, after visiting them in the Midlands.

Fast-forward to 2004 and a dentist from Manchester is interested in a Bentley T I'm selling, with the offer of a 1967 Daimler V8 250 in exchange. I ran that for 3 years, often as my only car and completing 2 weddings (1 of which was mine). Although not a patch on a 3.4 MkI (let alone a 3.8 MkII) Jaguar, these would comfortably see off a 2.4 / 240 and made a great noise to boot, with Edward Turner's little jewel of a V8 and twin tailpipes. I used to get about 25mpg from it, too.
The Daimlers are also usefully cheaper than the Jaguars, although finding a manual can be challenging (but not impossible).
More overindulgence ahoy : a lovely little clip of a Coombs / Coombs style Mk2 accompanied by a tweaked version of John Barry's Bond incidental music, which shows off the Mk2's lines really well...

Always liked the idea of a white one with red leather interior because James Fox drove on in 'Performance' in '68.

My own memories of owning a MK 1 in just one photograph. Probably not as good as a MK 2 (never owned one but may do shortly) but a superb car just the same. Having owned both 3.4 and 3.8 models from a MK VII to several Lynx 3.8's I always found the 3.4 the smoothest. When one of my cars is finally sold, I'll be searching for a 3.4
I’ve always preferred the looks of the mk1 over a mk2.ferret50 said:
Shame the Mk2 has lost it's original plate,
These cars drive so much better with two easy mods,
1 Rack and pinion steering
2 Coopercraft front calipers
If I recall correctly the Mk2 had a personal plate on before this one, so it may have lost it's original plate many years ago or could this be it's original plate re-instated ?These cars drive so much better with two easy mods,

Either way it was a very original car and lovely to drive.
Many of the rack and pinion conversions on Mk2's are poorly designed and while they may make the car lighter to steer they cause uneven tyre wear due to the incorrect steering angles.
The steering on the Mk1 in the picture was heavier than the Mk2, both had original steering.
Gratuitous photo of my Mk2 that I’ve owned for about 8-9 years now. Love driving it and it’s very capable of embarrassing quite a few modern cars with the amount of torque that wonderful 3.8 engine produces. Have taken it over to France a few times and I have to say (touch wood) apart from a failed HT lead on one occasion it’s never let me down.

Just a warning to people considering Coopercraft (or Zeus, they're the same thing). Both suppliers highly recommend buying the rear as well as the front calipers. The imbalance of braking power can cause the back overtaking the front. These cars drive so much better with two easy mods,

Next month's 'Jaguar World' magazine has a feature on the S3 XJ 3.4 manual that's for sale at Classic & Sportscar centre in Yorkshire...

I remember many years ago taking in an XJ40 2.9 manual with cloth interior: it was OK to drive but I really missed the leather.
An old friend used to be chummy with a Rolls Royce dealer in London and was invited to drive a Silver Shadow he'd just taken in. It was lovely: good colour, low miles, lovely interior etc, but something just didn't feel "right". They eventually worked out it was because it was specced with vinyl rather than cow.
The 3.4 has been for sale for some time now, the red Daimler Double Six he also has in stock was for sale earlier in the year with him at a lot less money. I assume he sold it and has now taken it back in,and is wanting the market to stay strong...top top money. He's done a couple of vids on Youtube, and earlier in the year the DD was one of them. I believe he sold them originally as a former Jag sales person.

I had a look at a P5B Coupe that was for sale a few years ago with a brand new vinyl interior in place of the original leather, it was nicely done in the correct colour but as per the RR above it just wasn't 'right'.
Rare Mk2 340 manual / overdrive with full history up for grabs at Justin Banks, can't be many of these left...
