𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
Of all the great Italian automotive marques, Maserati is a name that represents both automotive beauty and speed. Founded in Bologna in 1914, Maserati has its own rich sporting heritage that is far older than its Maranello based rival. And much like its rival it has used its Grand Prix successes to drive sales of it luxury road cars, offering customers a taste of Maserati's racing pedigree.
After a few decades of financial turmoil and numerous owners, Maserati was finally acquired by Ferrari in 1998, a move which ushered in a bright new era for the Italian marque. This new lease of life began with the hugely successful 3200GT, which was unveiled the same year. Powered by a 3.2-litre twin turbocharged V8, it was devastatingly quick and was hailed as one of the finest looking Italian GT's of all time.
The success of the 3200GT laid the foundations for the 4200GT, which was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 2001. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, the new 2+2 GT evolved the external appearance of its predecessor, with a bonnet bulge and more conventional tail lights setting it apart from the 3200.
Underneath the familiar and still very attractive styling was a raft of mechanical changes, the biggest of which was the Ferrari sourced 4.2-litre V8 engine. With 390BHP on tap, the naturally aspirated V8 more than made up for the lack of forced induction.
Which brings us to this very attractive looking 2003 Maserati 4200GT up for auction here with PistonHeads. Finished in the stunning colour of Azzurro Argentina Metallic with a cream interior, this sublime Italian GT sports the Cambiocorsa semi-automatic transmission.

This Maserati 4200GT was first registered on 25th June 2003. It was sold new by Lancaster Colchester in Essex.
The car has had just three owners from new, with the first owner keeping the Maserati for two years. The second owner acquired the car in April 2005, also from Lancaster Colchester.
It is believed this gentleman used the Maserati sparingly over the next few years, which is noted in a signed hand over letter in the history file. This letter notes that the car was on SORN in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The current and third owner acquired the 4200GT from the second owner in September 2015 and it has been in their custodianship since.
The second owner notes in their hand over letter that they had the car serviced by a friend of theirs who they say was a Ferrari mechanic, which explains some of the gaps in the service book.
Below is a list of the services carried out on the car:
● 2003/5,876 miles - Lancaster Colchester
● 2004/10,072 miles - Lancaster Colchester
● 2005/11,467 miles - Lancaster Colchester
● 2015/32,865 miles - Lancaster Colchester
● 2016/35,894 miles - Giallo Kent
● 2018/39,653 miles - AV Engineering
● 2019/41,913 miles - AV Engineering
● 2023/43,198 miles - AV Engineering
The Maserati's most recent service was carried out on 20th October of this year at a cost of £849. This included a repair to the speedometer cluster which was found to have been caused by a dry solder joint.
The car comes with the Maserati Owners Book Pack and is supplied with one key.
The Maserati also has a valid MOT Certificate until 2nd August 2024 with no advisories, which is fantastic peace of mind for the new owner.
It is also worth noting that as this model was registered in 2003, it benefits from the lower tax bracket… the savings of which can go towards the fuel fund!
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
The interior of the 4200GT is finished in cream leather which contrasts very nicely with the blue exterior. The seats are in nice shape with some marks and scuffs present, which are shown in the photos.
The front seats are electric and these move forward and back as they should. Some light cracking in noted on the centre of the rear seats.
A small tear is noted on the drivers door card and there is a crack on the passenger door speaker grill.
Some of the buttons on the centre console have become sticky, which is a common issue with Maserati/Ferrari interiors from this era. There are companies who now offer restoration services who can return the trim to the original factory look and this would be a worthwhile project for the new owner.
The headliner is in good clean condition. It has started to drop slightly, which is shown in the photos. With some of the interior cosmetics sorted, this would take the Italian GT to the next level.
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
Azzurro Argentina Metallic is a colour that simply looks fabulous on the Giugiaro designed 4200GT. The paint itself is in very good condition all round with a lovely shine. There are some small blemishes as one would expect for a 20 year old modern classic, but these do not detract from what is a very sharp looking Gran Turismo.
There are some small scuffs on the rear bumper corners which have been touched in, but these are easy to miss at first. A small bubble is noted in the centre of the rear bumper. A very small area of corrosion is noted just under the right rear tail light. These small blemishes are shown in the photos.
The headlights have started to go slightly cloudy and would benefit from a polish - if the car stays local in Kent, then take a look at Happy Headlights who the PistonHeads team have used a few times before.
A crack is noted in the front bumper grill surround, however the Trident emblem is present and intact.
The Maserati's alloys were refurbished by the current owner in anthracite grey and we think this colour looks superb against the metallic blue. The alloys are in very nice shape with the front tyres benefiting from new rubber in 2018, with the rears refreshed in 2019.
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
Under the bonnet resides the naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 engine. The engine bay presents in clean condition with the Maserati trident sitting proudly on show. The silver crackle finish on the cam covers is a nice understated contrast to the red that often dresses Ferrari engines.
The current owner upgraded the exhaust system to a new Larini stainless system in 2016 at a cost of £1,787.69. This comprised of a Larini “Sports” centre section and rear boxes. This upgrade enhanced the wonderful V8 soundtrack, however the owner found the centre X-Pipe was quite loud on motorway runs, so the original centre pipe has been reinstalled. The Maserati is now more civilised on long drives but still retains a wonderful V8 growl.
The owner goes on to add that the Larini X-Pipe is available by separate negotiation.
The Maserati has been looked after by marque specialist AV Engineering in Kent. During the cars most recent service, they inspected the clutch, which showed clutch wear of 55.78%. The print out of the diagnostics are included in the history file. Also in the history file are the results of oil analysis which shows the engine to be in good health. Please see the video in the Q&A section of this listing, which includes a walk around of the car and the most recent service video from AV Engineering.
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
Owning a Maserati is a dream come true for many petrolheads and having an exotic luxury GT wearing the famous Trident on the driveway is a real bucket list moment. This Maserati 4200GT is presented in what is arguably the best colour available. With some of the cosmetics addressed, this mechanically sorted Maserati 4200GT with its low miles and owners would be a very worthy addition to any collection.
